Mouth Sores
Mouth sores, although common, can be a source of discomfort and concern for many individuals. At the ENT, Sinus & Hearing Care Center, we provide expert insights and solutions for these often-painful oral occurrences.
Understanding Mouth Sores
Mouth sores, predominantly known as canker sores, are painful ulcers that can surface on the tongue and inside the mouth. These sores can emerge due to various reasons, from physical injuries and viral infections to stress and specific medications. Visually, they may appear white or slightly reddish and can vary in size.
Note: It’s essential to distinguish between canker sores and cold sores. Cold sores, usually appearing outside the mouth, are contagious blisters requiring a different course of treatment.
Symptoms of Mouth Sores
- Pain localized at the sore site
- Swelling in and around the sore
- Irritability
- Excessive drooling
- Associated headache and fever
If you recognize any of these symptoms, it’s recommended to consult with a specialist for an accurate diagnosis.
Approach to Treatment
Good news for most canker sore sufferers: these mouth ulcers usually heal within two weeks. To manage the discomfort, consider:
- OTC pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen
- Cool beverages and frozen delights to numb the pain
- Avoiding spicy or acidic dishes that can intensify the pain or hinder healing
In situations where these remedies don’t provide adequate relief, liquid antacids can be beneficial. For young children, a specific dosage is recommended based on their age. However, if a canker sore is unusually large, persists beyond two weeks, or shows signs of an infection, it’s crucial to seek medical attention immediately.
